Botox, Dysport and Xeomin

Botox, Dysport and Xeomin are neuroblockers which interrupt nerve transmission to the muscles. A large portion of course wrinkle and fold formation is caused by long standing muscle contraction in susceptible skin.

These medications are injected into the desired muscles. They are essential additions to our treatments for wrinkles, especially over the forehead, between the eyes, around the eyes, around the lips, the cords of the neck and downturn at the angles of the mouth.

Botox has been used medically for about 30 years and in an expert’s hands, it has been “perfected” for “muscle” wrinkles. It paralyzes the muscles which cause these wrinkles and folds. The benefit can last for up to 8-12 months. With continued use, the treatments can thin (atrophy) the involved muscles minimizing the folds and can give long term benefit. Continued uses can also minimize the frequency of treatments and maximize the benefits.

Dr. Lewis has developed the expertise to inject into the “belly” of the involved muscles to maximize the chances of a perfect result. He also uses clear tape for 24 hours to minimize the movement of the Botox from its precise placement. Botox has over the last few years been successfully used to treat migraine headaches and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) especially in the axillas (underarms), and on the palms and soles.

Recently, the FDA has approved two additional neuroblockers called Dysport and Xeomin. This has created some competition which has lowered the price of treatments and hopefully this price savings will continue.
